Hoi An is Vietnam's showpiece town. Located just inland on Vietnam's central coast, Hoi An seems to have more historical buildings and tailor shops than inhabited homes. It's a tourist magnet and can feel a little stuffy and hectic at times, but there's no loss of culture to study, silk to buy, or atmosphere to soak up.
Hoi An's tourist area is stocked with perfectly preserved Chinese, Japanese, and French edifices, making for a unique architecture mix. A purchased ticket is required to enter a few of the historical buildings, such as temples and merchants' homes.
One of the major draws of Hoi An though, is the myriad tailor shops where hand made couture can be purchased at rock bottom prices. Hotel and museum employees do an excellent job of promoting the local tailors by fashioning traditional silk pieces while on the job.
A fantastic beach is only four kilometers from town and offers a pleasant respite from Hoi An's hawkers who seem to outnumber tourists. The beach is also a great place to nurse a hangover contracted at the smattering of water holes in town. Whatever your excuse, it's a good one for eating fresh pineapple on the white sand.
Throw in good dining with specialties found nowhere else in the country, some Cham ruins outside of town, and Hoi An has plenty to keep visitors entertained for days.
- Pros:Interesting historical sights and architecture, hand-tailored clothing at super bargain prices, good beach near town, good food.
- Cons:Lots of touts around town and they're some of Southeast Asia's most aggressive.
- In a nutshell:The most diverse attractions of Vietnam's tourist spots.

My son was a waste of time... ANGKOR is definately vastly superior and My son cant in any way be compared to it.. wish id read this review before we arrived here!
Great introduction. I am looking forward to visiting Hoi An next week!
I liked you page, but don't agree wit My Son as a tourist trap. I have to admit I didn't go to Angkor, but anyway I think is something important and deserves more than that. Again, great page.
Great tips and pictures of Hoi An!
Nice pages. I was there at New Year and the weather was terrible. Shame as I thought it was a lovely place.
