Before going there, I had been told that Finland is grey and depressing, Helsinki boring and the Finns dour. But none of this proved true in July 1999.
It was Finland's first EU presidency, and the city was full of officials and visitors; but all Helsinki came to enjoy a free concert on the Senate steps on the first day of the Presidency and have a good time.
Helsinki turned out to have some seriously interesting buidings to show off, and to be surrounded by a lovely archipelago. Grey? Not at all. The sun shone the entire week I stayed there - including, of course, for most of the night. And the Finns were happy. Joviality prevailed. Could it have been the excellent weather that produced all those smiles?
- Pros:Architecture, open spaces, coastline
- Cons:Weather - not usually this good...
