Trials and Tribulations of a Journey It was time to leave the Black Forest and move onto Piesport in the Mosel, just a couple of hours away, or so we thought...................... We got on the Autobahn at Freiburg and took the A5 up to Mannheim, fine, if it wasn't for the driving heavy rain and the road works around Mannheim, which proved to be quite a nightmare. Plus the fact that it was a bank holiday week-end. Then we switched to the A6 and on towards Saarbrucken, branching off onto the A62 towards Trier then the Mosel. We chose to go over the Hunsruck for it's spectacular scenery, but, unfortunately it was shrouded in mist, it was very eerie as suddenly out the mist came the wind turbines that seem to have sprung up around this area. The trip should have taken around 3 hours, but due to the road works and severe weather conditions, it took us 6 hour's !!!!! Then when we thought we'd made it and finally arrived in Piesport, but it was closed for the Bank Holiday, well the tourist office was. So there was a delay in finding our hotel, after asking many times for directions we finally found it down a long dark lane an hour later. |
| | Three Days so what do you do ? Having arrived at our destination, with 3 days to see what this part of the Mosel had to offer, on our first day ,being a Sunday we took ourselves off to Bernkastel Kues. Monday, was a Bank Holiday and we found most places to be closed so we took the road north along the Mosel, mainly consists of small pretty small Villages, who's main industry is the wine trade. We found the streets very quiet apart from one small place that had a market and festival on, then we headed for Trier the oldest City in Germany. The last day we had intended to go to Maria Lach, which had been highly recommended by my Vt friend's, unfortunately we didn't make it, so that will have to be saved for another time. However we did go to Echternach in Luxembourg only to find it was a rest day and everywhere was closed, well almost everywhere !!!!!!!! |
