We only went to the lovely city of Trier for a day trip , so my knowledge is a little limited, we had been some 15 years earlier, but, it wasn't at all as we had remembered it. The large market square is now a pedestrian area, which makes it very easy to get around, unless you are in a wheelchair, then the cobbles can really shake you up a little. This is the most ancient City in Germany, and famous for the "Porta Nigra", which is the old gate into the City. Dotted around the Trier you will still find Roman ruins and some of the old City wall's. It was also the birth place of Karl Marks, there is a plaque on the wall of the house he was born in. Trier is located in the Rhineland Pfalz on the Mosel not far from the boarder with Luxembourg. Using your laptop could not be easier here, the whole of the market square is a Wi Fi hot spot, you need to go to one of the cafes for information. We went to the P&R, only to find out that it is closed on a Bank holiday and week-ends, so be warned ! The tourist office in next to the Porta Nigra, so this is a good place to start your exploration of the City, the little train also leaves from this point. |
| | Look at the lovely old buildings, you will find some wonderful architecture around the main square, stop off at a coffee shop. Enjoy the atmosphere. |
| | Wine and Beer You can't go to a City in the middle of a wine growing region like this, with out tasting the many wines on offer ! Germany produce some excellent wines and beers, and were better to taste it,, than at a wine bar in the centre of Trier ! |

I remember a twisted ankle from a fall on the cobbles! | JourneyOf1 Wed Jul 5, 2006 13:43 UTC Would love to visit this "oldest" city in Germany, beautiful photos you took. Quite right to always remember to bring your camera...in my case, one has to also remember not to drop the camera :-) |
