"Sierra Leone: The beautiful green, white and blue" Lariumboy's Profile

"Lion on the beach"

Originally called Sierra Lyoa, meaning "Lion Mountains" Sierra Leone is a small country on the west coast of Africa.

I've been living here for the past year and a half and have fallen in love with the sights, sounds, people and culture.

My place is just a ten minute walk from the beach, which allows me to cool off from the sub-saharan sun and relax with the locals.

I'm originally from Huntington, Indiana but haven't been there much since finishing university. I've lived in the Dominican Republic and also Bolivia and had the opportunity to travel extensively through South and Central America and parts of the Caribbean. I'm currently living in Lungi, Sierra Leone teaching in a vocational school Mathematics and English to ex-combatants and other displaced youth who were affected by the 10 yr. rebel war. The attrocities were many and the healing process is a slow one, but giving some of these young adults a chance to learn a trade to better their lives gives them hope in a future that a few years ago seemed very bleak.

Beautiful sunsets over the Atlantic are an everyday occurence.

Wildlife in Sierra Leone consists of chameleons, snakes, lizards, monkeys and a variety of sea creatures.

Crossing from Lungi to Freetown is a nice 40 minute trip when you can take in a beautiful sunset like this one.

Rainbows are a common sight when the rainy season is on its way out.

Sierra Leoneans call their food "chop" and going to one of the local markets is a must to get the right ingredients.

Enjoying a beautiful beach all to yourself is one of the gems Sierra Leone has to offer.

This crocodile was brought over by one Liberian refugee trying to sell it for $25. We told him to release it back in the wild.
