Local Customs: Stand On The RIGHT Of An Escalator

In London there is an unwritten rule when using an escalator. You ONLY stand on the right hand side of an escalator! This is so people are free to walk up the left hand side. Ignore this rule to your peril! You will get an earful from the angry office worker who just wants to get home quickly.

In London we have zebra crossings for pedestrians. A common mistake that tourists make is they think that they have the right to just walk across whenever they want and the cars have to stop. This is not the rule. The driver is NOT obligated to stop for you if you haven't yet stepped onto the crossing, it is at his/her discretion. If you are already on the crossing when h/she approaches, they are supposed to stop for you. But remember, the driver might not see you. Be vigilant and you'll be okay.

In many pubs in London there is a pool table for you to play. If there is somebody playing on the table and you want to play, the usual custom is to put your money for the game on the table, so others know that you are playing next. The usual amount per game is 50p or �1.

You will notice a number of people busking on the streets of central London. Some are simply terrible, are doing it to make a little money, and to be quite honest you'd happily pay them just to stop. However, a number of the buskers in London are actually very good. These are budding musicians, who are playing to be heard, rather than for the money. If you enjoy their music, drop some change in their box to show your appreciation.
