CITY OF MADRID

by luke850 - last update: May 26, 2004

My uncle lived in Madrid for about 5 years, where he taught English as a second language. Thanks to him I was able to get an 'insiders' view on the city, which is always a good in a new place. I enjoyed my time in Madrid, but didn't really miss it when we moved onto Palencia, which was an altogether different town in Spain. There were a number of sights to see, and as usual in Spain, the nightlife is excellent and goes on until very late into the night. All in all, I liked Madrid, but certainly didn't fall in love with it.
Bernabeu Stadium

FOOTBALL - AGAIN!

You might be fed up with me going on about the football stadiums in every city I visit, but i'm going to tell you about the Bernabeu anyway!

The Bernabeu Stadium is where Real Madrid CF play their matches, and is named after one of their greatest players, Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid is the most successful club in Europe and probably the most famous in the world. If you can get a ticket to watch them play, get it! I took the stadium tour instead, and visited their training ground, where I was able to see their players train. Unfortunately the training ground has moved, so I am not able to include the address in my tips pages.
Side Street

CITY LIFE

Life in Madrid is similar to many capital cities in Europe - the centre is busy with people going to and from work, traffic and tourists. However, there are a number of smaller, quiter side streets, with numerous intersting shops to browse in.

Bars and restaurants open late and stay open until late, which is a bit of a luxury for somebody from London, where most bars are forced to shut at 11pm. One intersting thing that I noticed was McDonalds selling beer, which seemed very strange to me! I can't ever imagine that being introduced in England!
