Created in 1667 by Andre Le Notre, Louis XIV's gardener,in order to improve the view from the Tuileries garden. The avenue was lenghtened at the end of the 18th century, running from the place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe. Two kilometers long and bordered by trees, the Champs-Elysees has become the center for festivities and official parades. It is a magnet for tourists and night strollers.

Paris just wouldn't be Paris without the Eiffel Tower. Designed by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World Fair, at 300m it was then the world's tallest building. Not everyone was happy when it was first built, but today it is one of the world's most visited monuments. The first and second floors can be reached using the stairs, and lifts take visitors to the magnificent view at the top.

Discretely situated in the 5th arrondissement, these Roman ruins are easy to miss. They're a great place to come if you're looking for a bit of greenery and a breath of fresh air in a friendly neighborhood setting. The ruins were first unearthed in 1869, and have since been excavated and landscaped. On weekends, expect to find families and loads of children running around. Or bring a book and a sandwich on a sunny weekday, and enjoy the peace and quiet. nearest train: métro: Monge open hours: 8am-sunset daily

This monument is a perfect example of Parisian Gothic architecture. Although the 50 metre high tower is all that remains of Saint Jacques La-Boucherie church (which was built in the 16th century and destroyed just after the French Revolution), it's still an impressive sight.
