The Vaduz castle is situated on top of a hill about hundred meters above the rest of the city, and it's by far the most famous landmark of the capital of Liechtenstein. It was built, as a fortress, during the 12th century, but since 1938 it's the home for the royal family. Unfortunately the prince and his family are a grumpy gang, so they won't let anyone inside for a visit... Still it's possible to walk all the way up to the castle, or go by car if you're the lazy type. We decided to make the first choice, as the italian restaurant owner the late night before had promised me "it won't take more then ten minutes to get up there". Either he was a friend to the grumpy prince, or world champion in mountain climbing, as we after ten minutes hardly had left the city center... But 40-50 minutes later we had gone through all the forest, and finally reached the castle. Only to realise that the view was crap (a huge castle was in the way...) and the view of the castle was much nicer from down in the city than up close. Still it was a nice walk, and another five minutes walk above the castle there is a nice view over the city. The best watchtower though was a bit more than half way up. At night the castle is nicely lighten up (have no idea how the poor prince can sleep with all those lamps on!?), to be seen from all over downtown.

Directions: Above the city. You can't miss it, as the castle is in view from everywhere in Vaduz.

Alright, those of you who knows me also knows that I'm not the biggest art lover in this world. The one in Vaduz I would have liked to visit though, but as we were there during the weekend it was all closed down. Very unlucky... Hm... ;) But the Kunstmuseum was opened up in 2002, after some private investors came up with money. The most interesting part I saw was the building itself, as it's built as a massive black cube. As if it wasn't enough with one museum, the small village of Vaduz (5000 inhabitants) also have a National museum, as well as a Post museum.

St Florish Parish Church, also known as the cathedral of Vaduz, was built in just five years between 1868 and 1873. It's located just at the beginning of the city center, in the south side, and the tower shows off over most of the central parts. Unfortunately I was never able to get inside, but it's really huge, and looks very nice. Built in a neo-Gothic style, it's on the place where it earlier was a chapel.

Directions: Just follow the walking street/head street of Vaduz in the south direction and you'll stand in front of the church very soon.
