Things To Do: Schloss Vaduz

  • The Vaduz castle is situated on top of a hill about hundred meters above the rest of the city, and it's by far the most famous landmark of the capital of Liechtenstein.

It was built, as a fortress, during the 12th century, but since 1938 it's the home for the royal family. Unfortunately the prince and his family are a grumpy gang, so they won't let anyone inside for a visit...

Still it's possible to walk all the way up to the castle, or go by car if you're the lazy type. We decided to make the first choice, as the italian restaurant owner the late night before had promised me "it won't take more then ten minutes to get up there".

Either he was a friend to the grumpy prince, or world champion in mountain climbing, as we after ten minutes hardly had left the city center...
But 40-50 minutes later we had gone through all the forest, and finally reached the castle.

Only to realise that the view was crap (a huge castle was in the way...) and the view of the castle was much nicer from down in the city than up close.

Still it was a nice walk, and another five minutes walk above the castle there is a nice view over the city. The best watchtower though was a bit more than half way up.

At night the castle is nicely lighten up (have no idea how the poor prince can sleep with all those lamps on!?), to be seen from all over downtown.

Directions: Above the city. You can't miss it, as the castle is in view from everywhere in Vaduz.

    Things To Do: Art museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alright, those of you who knows me also knows that I'm not the biggest art lover in this world. The one in Vaduz I would have liked to visit though, but as we were there during the weekend it was all closed down.

    Very unlucky... Hm... ;)

But the Kunstmuseum was opened up in 2002, after some private investors came up with money. The most interesting part I saw was the building itself, as it's built as a massive black cube.

As if it wasn't enough with one museum, the small village of Vaduz (5000 inhabitants) also have a National museum, as well as a Post museum.

    Things To Do: The views
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vaduz - The mountains on the side of Vaduz.
  • The mountains on the side of Vaduz.

  • Wherever you go in Vaduz there is a nice view in at least one direction. If you're down in the city the view up over the mountain is fantastic (at least if the sky is clear in not foggy...) and if you go up in the mountains the view down over the city, or over to the other mountains is equally great.

Despite the time it took to walk up to the castle I would say that it's well worth it. About ten minutes under the castle there is a nice viewing point, where you have the best sight of the land under you. While you're up at the castle the view is somehow worse.

Also, when arriving into Vaduz, from Switzerland, make sure you sit on the left side of the bus, as the mountains on the way in are just spectacular!

    Things To Do: The cathedral
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • St Florish Parish Church, also known as the cathedral of Vaduz, was built in just five years between 1868 and 1873. It's located just at the beginning of the city center, in the south side, and the tower shows off over most of the central parts.

Unfortunately I was never able to get inside, but it's really huge, and looks very nice. Built in a neo-Gothic style, it's on the place where it earlier was a chapel.

Directions: Just follow the walking street/head street of Vaduz in the south direction and you'll stand in front of the church very soon.

Since you don't like rosé which kind do you prefer, white or red? Excellent tip on the taxis - hilarious! Love your "Sunshine against the Mountains" photo - gorgeous!

Henrik, fabulous page about Vaduz. Brings back memories of my day here. I have also been to the Old Castle Inn, but unfortunatley didn't see a footie match. Well done ... :-)
