Wonder of the Ancient World

Tut-ankh-am-un
I have been to Egypt twice on my Travels the first time was for 4 days in Cairo where I got a chance to see the Necropolis at Giza where the great Pyramids and Sphinx are located, the ancient city of Memphis and its necropolis Saqqara, the city of Cairo itself and the fantastic Cairo Museum. This was in 1983 and the photographs show their age a little I’m afraid.
In 1997 I again had the opportunity to visit Egypt and spent 2 weeks there, the first week was on a Nile Cruise and the second week was spent relaxing in Luxor and taking in the Valley of the Kings and the temple at Karnak. I left Luxor on the 16th of November the day before the awful massacre of tourists at the temple of Queen Hatshepsut. I count this as a lucky escape as originally I was supposed to have stayed on for an additional week and quite probably would have been in the area at the time.
In spite of the risks associated with travel to Egypt I would strongly recommend it as a must see destination. The ancient Egyptian cultures give a fascinating look into the development of our global civilisation.

The Sphinx

One of the most enduring and curious symbols of Giza is the Sphinx. Here is a picture of it with the great pyramid of Cheops in the background at the sound and light show.
One small step for mankind....
The earlier forms of pyramids were step ones like this one at Saqqara. This used to be visible from Giza but with the growth of the city of Cairo this may not now be the case.
