| | Description aka "D-Town" aka "Big D"
This *is* life in the big city.
The city of Dallas was founded by John Neely Bryan in 1841 (his first survey of the North Texas area was 1839). The name "Dallas" was named after "his friend, Dallas". There are many theories as which individual this actually references. One theory has the city named after George Miffin Dallas, the vice president at the time of annexation. Another theory has the city named after Joseph Dallas, who was from Arkansas...as was Mr. Bryan. Joseph moved to Cedar Springs in 1943.
In any case, the city is now the 3rd largest city in Texas (Houston is 1st, San Antonion is 2nd), and the largest city in the D/FW Metroplex.
Dallas is all about business, money, and the business of making money. There are numerous corporate headquarters (regional headquarters) either in Dallas or Dallas County. Some exampes are Yum! Restaurants, CompUSA, Microsoft, Nokia, Clear Channel, and many, many others.
You know a city is big and important when it has 5 national highways running through it (I-20, I-30, I-35e, I-45, I-635). |

Jaster83 Thu Oct 23, 2008 13:02 UTC Um... I will admit that driving in Dallas is a unique experience. The mindset of people in the Metroplex is "I have somewhere to be." If you're just cruising around doing the speed-limit you might get run over. (Or given a ticket... for slowing traffic.) | thecatsmeow Tue Sep 6, 2005 05:17 UTC Interesting Dallas page. Nice pictures and some good tips. But I draw the line at fried pickles. ACK! Joyce | mrclay2000 Fri Oct 29, 2004 05:59 UTC San Antonio is third and Dallas is second. Houston, dear Houston, still #1. | canadiantravelgirl Fri Sep 3, 2004 02:32 UTC Cool pics and good tips!!! |
