Packing Lists: Mosquito Repellent, Definitely!
  • Tip Rating:

  • Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: What should you pack for a trip to French Polynesia? Depends on the island, the length of the stay, and the degree of casualness.

Dressing for a big city like Papeete should be a step dressier than in Manihi, where there is only one hotel and there are never more than 100 people in total. Staying at the same place for a significant number of days would require less clothing when you can use the laundry facilities.

A summer dress or light cotton trousers and shirt are classier at dinnertime than shorts and tank tops although no one would say anything if you choose the latter. Knowing how to pack also helps; we have never carried more than a shoulder bag when we go to the islands.

Toiletries & Medical Supplies: The one most important item that you cannot leave behind is mosquito repellent. You can choose to buy it at the markets on the islands, of course, but in my experience, the Tahitian mosquitoes are immune to the Tahitian mosquito repellent.

Forget the coils. I think Tahitian mosquitoes laugh at the coil while dancing around it with glee. A repellent with a very high percentage of DEET is the only thing that may scare those miniature vampires off for a little while. Personally, I would rather bring along a potent product that I have tested at home instead of relying on the local products and end up with mosquito bites all over my body.
