The Essence Of Munich (A Simple Man's Version)

by Ciambella - last update: Mar 27, 2006

I was in Munich the first time in 1969. I was 20 and it was the summer of my second year in college. I had $700 saved up and the round trip airfare from California already ate up $299. The rest, $401, was what I spent on accommodations, food, drinks, and transportation between eight countries for the 6-week journey. I came home with 25 cents left in my pocket.

In Munich, I got off the train and went straight to Hofbräuhaus. I parked myself there for 12 hours, drank 7 litres of beer that were served in the old clay mug, tried to hide a mug (an empty one) under the coat but the staff stopped me at the door. I staggered back to the train station, somehow got on the correct train. I asked the woman who sat in the same compartment where her destination was. She said Hamburg. "Good. Would you wake me up when we get there?" Then I promptly fell to sleep.

Before the train pulled into the station in Hamburg, the gentle woman woke me up, gave me some cheese and an apple.

I loved Hofbräuhaus on that first trip, and I love it more with every subsequent trip although I no longer can drink like a fool and one litre of beer now is more than enough for Nathalie and me to share.

What is the essence of Munich? To me, it is beer halls, gentle people who give food to strangers, good trains that allow you to sleep soundly, and the sense of things in order.

Everything always turns out fine in Munich.

I read all these tips about the Hofbräuhaus being so touristy. I have been going there for forty years and my opinion is the same as yours. I have written about it in VT from a different angle than yours but our conclusions are the same. Thanks.

Isn't the food & shopping at the Hbf amazing? And a real godsend on a Sunday when everything else shuts!
