Things To Do: Christkindlesmarkt

The Nürnberg Christkindlesmarket is one of the most famous and oldest Christmas Markets in Germany. It is held from the last Friday of November until the day before Christmas. Lots of sweets, ornaments, lights, activities and live performances. Lots of fun. Evening hours are the busiest; do your shopping earlier in the day, when you can examine the goods and compare the prices. Twinkling lights tend to make everything look better than they really do and impulse buying happens more often when the crowd starts building.

Things To Do: The Emperor Slept Here
Tip Rating: |

Stands on a hill above the 5km long wall of the Old Town, Kaiserburg Castle is a cultural and historical landmark of Nuremberg. From XI to XVI century, this was where nearly all German kings and emperors held court.
Don't let the stark simplicity fool you. Remember Frederick von Hohenstaufen, aka Friedrich Barbarossa, aka Frederick the Red Beard, aka The Sleeping King? After waking up from his long sleep in a cave in the Kyffhäuser mountain of Thuringia, he became King Frederick I. and then later, crowned as Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Adriano IV Breakspear. The Emperor slept there, and others royal heads after him also spent many days and nights during their reigns in this Imperial Castle.

Sinwellturm or Sinwell Tower was the watchtower in Kaiserburg Castle; it is only 35m high. If you have a few minutes to spare, don't miss the easy climb that will reward you with a beautiful view of the city.

Things To Do: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Tip Rating: |
If you don't like the thought of climbing or if you have mobility problem, the view from the wall of Kaiserburg Castle would be enough for a good picture opportunity, especially if it were a cold winter day when smoke escaped from a chimney to form a flow of white cloud against a misty grey sky.

Things To Do: Albrecht Dürer
Tip Rating: |

Albrecht Dürer was no doubt the central figure of German Renaissance Art. He was born in 1471 in Nuremberg, and he died 57 years later in the same town.
The range and versatility of his work was astonishing. His woodcuts and engravings were what made him famous, but he also produced magnificent religious paintings and powerful portraits of himself and others.
I don't think this statue on the square near his house does him justice. His self-portraits show him as a much better looking man with beautiful curly locks and a perpetual air of melancholy.

Things To Do: The Most Important House In The City
Tip Rating: |
This is the house where Albrecht Dürer lived the last two decades of his life, from 1509 until his death in 1528. Three centuries after his death, the city bought the house, preserved it, and turned it into a museum. Inside the four-story house, there are many permanent exhibits devoted exclusively to Dürer's life and works.

Things To Do: The Young Hare
Tip Rating: |
Albrecht Dürer must be very fond of animals because he often held them in high regard in his works. He put an elk in a painting of Adam and Eve, a monkey in a woodcut of the Virgin Mary, three hares to present the Holy Trinity in a woodcut of the Holy Family. When there wasn't an opportunity to incorporate animals with saints, he presented them proudly in their own right. He brought to light strong and detail images of storks, parrots, lions, baboons, beetles, lobsters, crabs, and even rhinoceros.
The Young Hare was one of his most famous works. He first painted it in watercolour, then used opaque gouache to paint the fur, then added highlights to create a three-dimensional appearance.
The sculpture of two hares located in Albrecht Dürer Square is a good representation of the painting.

Things To Do: Ship Of Fools
Tip Rating: |
Albrecht Dürer contributed a major of the woodcuts to Das Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools), the famous work of German law professor/satiric poet Sebastian Brant. In the book, Brant wrote about the misfits and their misdeeds -- drunkards, thieves, spendthrifts, unscrupulous judges, loose women, and monks with low character -- together in a ship sailing for a fool's paradise called Narragonia.
The sculpture of The Ship of Fools is a tribute to both the author and the artist.

Things To Do: The River Pegnitz
Tip Rating: |
Pegnitz, a tributary of the Main River, divides Nuremberg into two quarters, Lorenzer Seite and Sebalder Seite, respectively named after the two churches Lorenzkirche and Sebalduskirche. There are four islands in the Pegnitz and many bridges crisscrossing the river.
A walk along the Pegnitz takes you from castle to museums, fountains to churches, weeping willows to long line of flowerpots, medieval town to modern city, plus a view of ducks floating unconcern between the two parts of a city.
