Getting TO/AROUND: To go from Amsterdam to London, we took the train to Hoek van Holland and then the ferry to cross the English Channel to Harwich.
Stena Line is the ferry line that connects Hoek van Holland and Harwich. The two old ferries on this route are named Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica. The newer version on which we rode is a catamaran called HSS Discovery, said to be the world's largest super ferry.
The comfortable journey takes 3.5 hours, with check-in time at least one hour before departure. The procedure to board the ferry is the same as with any airline: passport is required, heavy luggage are checked-in, and passengers must go through security checkpoint.
You can buy just ticket on the ferry or a combination ticket to cover for train from Amsterdam to Hoek van Holland, ferry, and then train from Harwich to Liverpool Street Station. Online booking is the least expensive way to do, and the earlier you book, the more you save.
Failing to make the decision until the night before, we booked our fare at the international ticket window at the train station. Besides the fact that we had to pay higher price for last minute travel during the holidays, we also had to pay the high commission, which is charged by everyone who is in the business of hotel and travel booking in Amsterdam including the city-run tourist office.

Getting TO/AROUND: Beijing is called the bicycle capital of the world because at the ratio of 1:1.2, there are 10 million bicycles in the city of 12 million residents. Coming to a very close second, at the ratio of 1:1.25, there are 600,000 bicycles for 750,000 residents in Amsterdam.
Bicycles are everywhere and ridden by everyone, from distinguished people in business suits to reggae dudes in dreg locks, from the elderly to grade school students, there is nothing to distinguish one rider to another, everyone on his or her bike, pedaling swiftly on the cobblestones, over the tram tracks, easing his or her way in traffic, flying down the streets while deftly avoiding the oblivious tourists.
If you want to be overwhelmed by the amount of bicycles Amsterdam, go to the parking structures by the train station and take a look. The 3-story parking garage easily holds 10,000 or more bicycles and it is full to the brim every day even in the mid of winter.
