Restaurant Name: Divertimento
A beautiful cafe with tasteful decoration, Divertimento offers simple food for both eat in and take away. All food is made with natural ingredients, which changed daily. Good coffee, good homemade cakes, good daily salad, courteous service, and low price, all rolled into a combination of success.
When weather permits, the tables outside provide a good place to watch people and enjoy the view of the flower market across the street.
Divertimento is also a good gay scene.

Restaurant Name: Wing Kee
There are many positive reviews on this Chinese restaurant from the local but I did not read them until much later, after we have already frequented the place about half a dozen times.
There are over 80 items on the menu, and every dish we have eaten here is equally good and most important, authentic. The portion is large, the meat is tender, the vegetable is fresh, and the sauce is well made. The service is typical of local Chinese restaurants in every country, efficient and without fanfare.
During lunchtime, the line for take-out is long with Chinese and Dutch locals.

Restaurant Name: Happy Corner
We ate at this restaurant once and regretted every time we passed by it.
A restaurant that serves Chinese food and Indonesian food together is a bizarre concept that only exists in Amsterdam. The two cuisines are not at all alike. The ingredients used in the food are not at all similar. The tastes between the two are as far apart as China and Indonesia. The difference in the two cultures is as large as the Pacific Ocean that separates them. So why would a restaurant want to bring the two foods together and place them under the same kitchen?
You know the result of this bizarre match, do you? A disaster.
We had that for dinner one night and forever I will regret the time and money we spent.
Favorite Dish: Not a thing. The same sauce covers all the foods so they look the same and taste the same. The presentation is less appealing than a Sloppy Joe, the texture is mushy, the taste is bad, and the after taste is unmentionable.

Coffee Shops: For Adults Only: Greenhouse Effect

Restaurant Name: Coffee Shops
As mentioned in another tip, those who are allergic to smoke still have other options for experimenting with marijuana. Brownies and chocolate cake are good alternatives. However, not all coffee shops offer cakes/brownies, and not all cakes are created equal.
The Coin Coffeeshop used to have one of the best brownies. However, the last time we were there, they said they had stopped baking and they referred us to Greenhouse Effect coffeeshop instead. It was not clear to us if The Coin stopped baking that day as a temporary measure or permanently. However, the recommendation for Greenhouse Effect could not have been better!
The cake we purchased was a hashy chocolate cake square. It was delicious in taste, moist in texture, and powerful in its side effects! One square of cake cost only €4 and provided enough stimulation for three people to share. Highly recommended, not only for the cake, but also for the general mellow ambiance of the cafe.

Restaurant Name: La Place Marché du Monde
La Place Marché du Monde is bright and spacious, with spartan tastefulness. It's reminiscent of an IKEA showroom: large, block-like tables, light wood chairs and high stools, and attractive light fixtures.
Despite its neat, polished appearance, this 3-story restaurant is actually a self-service cafeteria. Diners select the food, pay the bill, and carry the trays to their own tables, while the staff is busy with other duties.
Food selection is expansive and wholesome, but not inventive. There are pizza, sandwiches, grilled meat, boiled potatoes, sauté vegetables, and deserts. The price is higher than other family-style sit-down restaurants, and even higher when one realize that Marché du Monde is, after all, only cafeteria food.
The decor is very pleasant, but as with all cafeterias, there is no ambience. This is not a place to bring in a date or having any kind of personal conversation, especially when the smaller tables by the windows are taken and the only spaces left are at the communal seating areas.

El Torado: A Terrible Experience

|
Restaurant Name: El Torado
If you like below-mediocre food, consider El Torado. If you like below-mediocre food accompanied by bad service, come to El Torado. If you like below-mediocre food accompanied by bad service while sitting on uncured pelts that ruin your clothes, definitely come to El Torado. If you desire to fork out a bunch of money for the experience of sitting on uncured pelts that ruin your clothes, while eating below-mediocre food and receiving bad service, El Torado is a dream come true!
The above paragraph sums up our family's experience at El Torado. If there were a restaurant in Amsterdam that was worse than El Toredo, we were fortunate enough not have heard of it.
Favorite Dish: Not a thing.
1- The food. Argentina beef is supposed to be one of the best in the world, but El Torado, an Argentina restaurant, evidently must not know about that reputation. The steak was absolutely the worst I have ever eaten, in my entire steak-eating life. It was brought to the table cold to touch and rubbery in texture. I could not remember what dishes other members of our family ordered, but not one person was pleased with what he/she had.
2- The service. Two words: borderline insulting. A uniform reaction to all of our inquiries was an insolent stare or indifferent shrug, or both. Selection of beers, the cut of beef, the option of a side dish -- nothing brought forth a pleasant acknowledgement from our waiter.
3- The pelts. Everywhere in the restaurant, hung on the wall, draped over the posts, covered up the chairs, were these offensive cowhides. And I don't mean offensive because of their animal nature -- I mean offensive on a very practical level. Since the pelts weren't cured properly, the rawhides poked holes in the fabric of our clothing! My wool trousers and sweater were ruined. And if holes weren't created, huge masses of hairs were collected. For an hour after we left the restaurant, our adult children shed piles of hair wherever they walked. They looked like they just finished rolling around in a barn!
4- The bill. One of the more expensive restaurant bills we received in Amsterdam came from El Torado. Almost 90 Euro for a bad experience.

Wagamama: Noodles, Noodles, And More Noodles

Restaurant Name: Wagamama
Wagamama has two locations in Amsterdam, both offer the same food as the original and other branch restaurants in London and Dublin. The same noodles and rice dishes are suitable for carnivores, vegetarians, and even vegans. The staffs are energetic and courteous, and all familiar expectations are answered pleasantly.
Wagamama is always a good restaurant, even if the dishes, after a while, are no longer stimulating.
