Name of Shop: Folkart Kezmuveshaz Kft
This large shop is well stocked with all kinds of traditional handcraft items. Linen, blankets, clothing, wall hangings, ceramics, porcelain dolls, wooden toys, knickknacks, almost everything you can think of is there. I use the word "almost" because we asked for a hand-embroidered baby receiving blanket and they did not have it.
The shops are bright and beautiful and the staffs are courteous. Seeing us comparing painted wooden eggs, the owners called a young woman out from the backroom. The young woman explained to us in her halting English about the Hungarian tradition off egg giving, and the intricacy in the way the eggs are painted.
Prices are high but most products are of excellent quality, and best of all, there is no pressure from anyone of the staff. We liked this shop enough that we came back again later on that day to purchase more things.
What To Buy: Hungary is a country famous for handcraft. Laces are hand weaved, linen hand embroidered, clothing hand sewn and appliqué, shawls hand tied, knickknacks hand painted, there is no lack of Hungarian memory items to bring home.
We bought hand-embroidered table linen for our home and for our daughter's home, hand-painted wooden eggs for our first grandchild, a hand-tied and embroidered shawl for my sister, and a hand-appliqué wool jacket for me.
As an appreciation for our patronage, the shop gave us a hand-sewn and appliqué wallet.
What To Pay: Prices vary depending on the item and the intricacy of the design. A simple hand-painted wooden egg costs 1,700Ft, a rame-design (painted both sides and also on the space in between) at 2,300Ft. An elaborated hand-tied and embroidered shawl starts from 120,000Ft. Table linen starts at 25,000Ft and goes up to 80,000Ft.
