We came to Santorini without a plan. To be precise, we did not plan to go to Santorini at all. We started out with the trip only to do some light hiking in Val Gardena, then a couple of days in Venice and a wine-tasting excursion with a few VTers. Then we would go home. After all, this was the first trip since Charles' heart attack three months ago; we did not want to do anything strenuous. |
| | The wine tasting excursion was cancelled. Charles decided to head for Corfu. After three days there, he decided we should go to Athens, "You cannot see Greece and miss the Acropolis", he said. I agreed, so we headed to Athens.
In Athens, he said casually, "You will love Santorini; you will go crazy there taking tons of pictures of the narrow streets and the whitewashed houses with blue doors."
Yes, I do love taking pictures, but my camera sucks. Yes, I do love narrow streets, but we have them all around us in Italy. Yes, I do love whitewashed houses and blue doors, but we also have them in Ischia and the Amalfi Coast, closer to us.
"Are you sure you want to extend the trip just so I could see things that I have seen in Italy?" I asked.
"Oh, this is different, I loved it the last time I was here, and you will love it too." He answered with conviction.
That was how we came to Santorini, because my spouse told me that I would love it. |

Yes, the houses that are stacked up one on top another with awkward symmetry was done for the vision. Yes, the blue doors are to give the illusion that one is surrounded by water. Yes, the whitewash is easy to upkeep, also brings in more light to the traditional one-room houses with small windows. Yes, everything is there because of the tourists.
We know that, we know the island, or at least, Thira, is a big tourist trap, but is there anyone out there who does not love Santorini?
I don't think we could help it. We were wowed by what were there, and we forgot why they were there. That was either love or infatuation -- I don't know which. So, like everyone else on the planet, I was dazzled by Santorini. It was lame, but I could have done worse. |
