We arrived in Söll one December evening, the night before my birthday. At six o'clock, the sky was dark and everything else was white. The houses were white, the streets were white, and the light reflected off the snow was white. In addition, the fog was rolling in.
The taxi driver could not find the street or see the number on the house. He called the owner, instructions were given, and still the house was not to be found. The owner called him back, more instructions were given, and still the house was not to be found. It seemed we were now driving in circles. The village was small, we had seen the same houses at least three times -- or were they the same houses? It was hard to tell when everything was covered in snow.
The owner called the taxi driver back again, and still the house was not going to be found. Then all of a sudden, a car passed us from behind, and then stopped right in front of us. The driver door was opened and someone was gesturing. Aha, the owner had come out to lead us in.
We were at the house in five seconds after that: the entire time we were lost, we were within a few hundred yards from it!
There was five feet of snow on the ground, on the roof, on the trees. Snow continued to fall that evening and during the night. In the morning, we woke up with almost another foot of fresh snow.
It was my birthday, a white birthday. And in five days, it would be Christmas, a white Christmas, more beautiful than any Christmas I have ever experienced. |

visited Soll 6 times, about to go again for the 7th. Mirabell is wonderful, the owner Margaret recognises us whenever we go even if its several years since our last visit. Agree with canardvert it is the friendliest village in the world. | canardvert Sun Mar 25, 2007 15:24 UTC
