General Tips: Sleeping At The Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: When we arrived in Dublin late on a Saturday night without hotel reservation, we knew there was a chance we may have to sleep in the airport, therefore we checked out the chairs and the different areas upon arrival.

All the chairs in Dublin airport are equally divided into three kinds: the hard metal chairs with individual armrests, the lightly padded chairs with individual armrests, and the lightly padded chairs with only armrests at the ends. All of them are formed in a group of four; the lightly padded chairs have a table in between the chairs.

The chairs are placed in a way that doesn't provide any privacy; one would need to move several rows of chair close together in order to not laying in wide-open areas. This may not be a problem during the week, but would be difficult on weekends and when there is a game on TV. This was exactly what happened the night we arrived, many passengers sat in front of the TVs watching a game while waiting for late night departure or arrival.

Moreover, even if you are lucky enough to claim the chairs without armrests, the uninterrupted length of the two chairs is not long enough for a stretch out even for someone as short as I am.

Luckily, we found a hotel for our stay so we didn't have to experience Dublin Airport at night. However, on the day we left, we saw the chairs being arranged in very strange ways: some were pushed against each another evidently to create a bit of privacy for an overnight sleep, and many were stacked up on top of one another the way restaurants do at closing time. This latter arrangement clearly showed an attempt to prevent access to the chairs, I wonder if airport personnel did so to discourage people from spending the night.

  • Favorite Thing: All the streets in Dublin are wheelchair accessible the same way as most streets in most major cities so Dublin is not special in that aspect. What makes Dublin special is all the streets are also suitable for the visually impaired person.

At every corner and at certain parts of the sidewalk, the asphalt stops being smooth and even. Instead, at those parts, there are three different patterns on the asphalt, with the most special one made up of small round bumps similar to the Braille dots. These dots indicate the part where the sidewalk slops down to meet the street, a danger that a visually impaired person may not see but able to feel either with a cane or the sole of the shoes. I always felt them while walking in Dublin.

Bravo to the Dublin urban planners and chalk another huge point to Ireland's Fair City.

I think Dublin is a very romantic city, the rain doesn't bother everyone, the nature is great and there is this atmosphere I can't explain but appreciate so much! Wish I was on a VT meeting in Dublin :)
