River And Bridges, Rain And Flowers

by Ciambella - last update: Jun 14, 2006

Ha'penny Bridge
The first time we saw Dublin was Valentine Day 2000. The city was covered in sheets of rain but the flower markets on Grafton Street were doing a thriving business. About half of the men on the street carried some flowers. The flowers were safely protected in cellophane and the men were under umbrellas or raincoats; the cold wind and the splash from cars passing over puddles on the streets did not seem to bother either flowers or the ones who carried them. These men just ended their long day at work and they all had a mission in mind, they were heading home or toward a place in which their wives or significant others were awaiting.

The beautiful flowers were only an added bonus; the proof of the romance was the flower carriers.

Six years later, we came back to the city on a whim to see Ellen who was on vacation there and to meet a group of wonderful VTers who live in Dublin (Louise, Joe, Gaby, and Lee). There weren't many changes. The flower markets on Grafton Street still showed beautiful blooms although business was a bit slow. The men who went about their days huddled under the raised-up collars of their coats, one youth who was sloppily drunk at 7PM tried to take a swipe at Charles' hat while cursing up a storm, his friend had to hold him back. The hat stayed intact, there was no rain on our parade, and we enjoyed another great trip to one of our most loved cities of all time.
