The City That Stands On Both Banks Of The Nervion

by Ciambella - last update: Oct 1, 2006

Zubizuri Bridge at night
The name Bilbao came from Bi Albo, which in Euskara, the language of Pais Vasco, means two sides, a reference to the two banks of the Rio del Nervion on which this rambling metropolis takes its claim.

The now capital of Bizkaia was only a small village of blacksmiths, seamen, and farmers when Lord Don Diego Lopez de Haro granted it the title of borough in 1300. Over the next six centuries, the new borough experienced a slow but steadily growth in foreign trade relations in coals, iron, and steel. The growth came with a price: Bilbao was known for many decades as an ugly and heavily polluted industrial city.

Then came the industrial decline, and though the future seemed bleak at the time, there was a silver lining in the dark cloud: the arrival of the great architects. Sir Norman Foster, Santiago Calatrava, and Frank O. Gehry were the team of geniuses who took the unattractive duckling into their folds and released a sophisticated swan to the world.

Bilbao has not looked back since.
