Getting TO/AROUND: When you are at the airport and/or Termini, do not accept taxi offers from anyone in the lobby area. Those drivers are illegal and they give Roman taxi drivers a bad name. Instead, walk out to the street and you will see a line of white or yellow cabs. They all bear the city shield on the side door. The cabs are parked in order and you are expected to take the first one in line.

When you are within the city, ask any merchant where you can find a taxi stand. At the taxi stand, you will see the same thing: a line of licensed cabs, waiting.

Roman taxi drivers are licensed and regulated; there is no need to worry about being overcharged. They always turn the meter on and always charge by the city-regulated rate. Note that there is an extra fee before 7AM and after 10PM on weekdays, plus all day on Sundays and holidays. Also, large luggage comes with an automatic luggage fee of ?1.04 each. In case of contention, the driver will provide at your request a receipt specifying itinerary, taxi number and amount paid.

Travel within the city should cost between ?7 - ?10. From the airport, it costs about ?45 plus luggage and/or weekend and evening charge.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are flying to Rome from within Europe, you probably use Ryan Air or Easy Jet and arrive at Ciampino, an airport in the suburb of Rome. There are a few options to get to Rome from Ciampino airport:

    1. Cotral. The Cotral bus takes you from Ciampino airport to Ciampino train station. From Ciampino train station, you’ll take the local train to Termini. Some Cotral routes also take you to Anagnina. This is the end of the Linea A, where you should take the metro toward Ottaviano and get off at Termini. This is the cheapest way (total cost: €2) but also takes the longest time. Tickets can be purchased at newspaper stand and from the machine.

    2. Schiaffini. The Schiaffini bus is large and comfortable. It’s more like a shuttle than a bus and the ride from the airport to Anagnina metro station takes about 10 minutes. The fare is €1, and each large piece of luggage costs €1 extra. What constitutes a large piece of luggage? Our half-filled 18" roll-on was not large in the eyes of the conductor/ticket seller.

    3. Terravision. The Terravision shuttle offers a 40-minute ride directly from Ciampino to Termini. The shuttle drops you in front of Hotel Royal Santini, a few steps from Termini. The nice thing about Terravision is that it's timed to leave approximately 30 minutes after each Ryan Air and Easy Jet arrival; this makes it the most convenient as well as the swiftest form of travel. It’s also the most expensive, at €10.

Personally, I never think about transportation beforehand. I usually wait until I’ve collected my luggage. Then, I walk out the door to see what bus is waiting outside and decide at that point.

Airports from/to Rome: From Fiumicino To The City

    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: Leonardo Express is the direct train between Leonardo da Vinci (or Fiumicino) airport and Roma Termini. There are no mid-way stops on this route. If you need to get off at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana or Tiburtina, make sure to board the FR1 or FM1 train to Fara Sabina instead.

The main characteristic of the Leonardo Express is the frequency: there are two trains every hour in each direction. It’s a thirty-one minute run to cover the 37 km distance.

Airport-bound trains depart at 22 and 52 minutes after the hour, while Termini-bound trains depart at 07 and 37 minutes after the hour. The first train leaves Termini at 5:52; the last at 22:52. The first train leaves Fiumicino at 6:37; the last at 23:37.

Ticket for an adult or a child over 12 years old is € 11. For frequent customers, a carnet of 10 tickets is available for € 85 (a savings of € 25). This could also be a good option for group travellers.

Besides ticket windows at all train stations, you can purchase tickets for the Leonardo Express online, from newspapers/tobacco stands (edicola/tabacchi) at the airport and in Termini, from all Trenitalia automatic ticket machines, from qualified travel agencies where the Trenitalia logo is displayed on the window, and at all major national airports.

Don’t forget to validate your tickets from the yellow machine on the binario before boarding.

Getting TO/AROUND: From Fiumicino, if you need to go directly to Trastevere, Ostiense, or Tiburtina, the train that takes you there is FR1(also called FM1) , the metropolitan line toward Fara Sabina.

The train on this line leaves every 15 minutes for each direction and the ticket costs € 5. The first train departs Tiburtina at 5:06, the last at 22:36. The first train departs Fiumicino at 5:57, the last at 23:27.

Metro-Bus-Tram: It's Not The Best, But It'll Do!

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Rome metro is not one of the best underground systems the world, but at least it’s faster than Rome buses and it takes you to most places in the city as well as to the outskirts.

There are only 2 lines in the metro system:

Linea A or orange line runs between Battistini and Anagnina. The popular stops on this line include Vatican Museum, St Peter Basilica, Spanish Steps, San Giovanni, Appian Way, Catacombs, and Cinecittà. (Appian Ways and Catacombs need a transfer to bus 660.)

Line B or blue lines runs between Laurentina and Rebibbia. The popular stops on this line include EUR, San Paolo, Piramide, Circus Maximus, Coliseum, Via Cavour, and Tiburtina.

Both lines cross each other in Termini.

Under normal schedule, both metro lines run from 5:30 to 23:30 (to 00:30 on Saturdays).

However, during the renovation on Line A (which started on Jan 10 this year and will last through the next three years if everything goes according to plan), the metro on that line will stop running at 21:00. Two special buses (MA1 between Battistini and Arco di Travertino, and MA2 between Washington and Anagnina) will pick up the last missing hours in the service.

Metro tickets are sold at newspaper stands, tobacco shops and vending machines at the stations. Metro ticket and bus ticket are interchangeable. Make sure to validate your ticket before using either system.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Ticket To Ride

Getting TO/AROUND: There are many different types of tickets for the bus and metro in Rome. Here is the explanation to help you see which is suitable for your travelling needs:

    - BIT (Biglietto Integrato a Tempo): At € 1, this is the shortest use ticket, good for 75 minutes from the time of validation. Keep an eye on the time; if you are still in transit within minutes of expiration, make sure to validate it again so you can continue the trip legally. This ticket is good for the bus as well as the metro, with a change in metro line as long as you don’t go through the turnstile again.

    - BIG (Biglietto Integrato Giornaliero): At € 4, this is a one-day ticket, valid for unlimited travel on the bus and metro from the time of validation until midnight of that day.

    - BTI (Biglietto Turistico Integrato): At € 11, this is a three-day ticket, valid for unlimited travel on the bus and metro for three days from the date you indicate at the time of purchase.

    - CIS (Carta Integrata Settimanale): At € 16, this is a weeklong ticket that is valid for unlimited travel on the bus and metro for seven days (from the time of validation until midnight of day # 7).

    All tickets are interchangeable on:

    - ATAC buses
    - COTRAL buses (only on urban lines)
    - Both metro lines
    - Met.Ro trains between Rome - Lido; Rome - Sacrofano; and Rome - Pantano.
    - One-way trip on the FS train (2nd class) on certain local routes.

Tremendous Rome pages, really like how easy it is for us all to discover our own little niches for cafes and ristorante. Can't believe it's been nearly 3 years - we'll be back by ferragosto

I have seen similar. This is their "job" and no human kindnesses are included. They are afraid you'll get a picture.

Roman taxi drivers including the authentic ones are generally crooked. They often travel extra distances, or try to short change you. They were the single worst thing about our stay.

Mom and I often went to Cafe Greco to star gaze. We were most enchanted by the spectre of an aging Maestro Di Chirico ensconsed on the love seat reviewing the drawing portfolios of the eager young artists as he took his morning coffee.
