  • Smeraldo is a good hotel in a very central location, with good sized rooms, good sized bathrooms, and everything very clean. The double room downstairs is suitable for guests with mobility problems, but it can be a bit noisy due to the proximity to the front desk. All the rooms upstairs are much quieter. The staff can be pleasant, very helpful, or indifferent, depending on the time of day.

The rate has changed quite a bit after the renovation. It is now higher than most double rooms I stay at when we are in the city; that is why I rate it "more expensive than average". That said, I have read the prices that people tend to pay for their hotel rooms and I would say Smeraldo's rate is probably average for most tourists.

  • I like Hilton Hotels. Call me crazy if you want, but if I have to be in Rome for an early flight out of Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), I would surely stay at Hilton and nowhere else. In fact, I have stayed there quite often.

At Hilton Fiumicino, I would never have to worry about an early morning taxi, train or metro in order to get to the airport on time, since it would take me only six minutes to walk the distance from the hotel to the check in counter at Fiumicino. Hilton delivers the guaranteed comfort that I occasionally crave. The soft carpet under my feet, the shoe shine machine, the room spacious enough for two people to walk around without bumping into one another, the strong pressure shower in a spotless bathroom, the soft and large towels, the firm bed, the heater and air conditioner that work every time, the TV with CNN, the newspaper in the morning, the front desk that can answer every request, and the full breakfast at 5:30 AM. Those little things when put together have always helped to prepare my body for a long flight.

People tell me that Hilton is a boring, corporate-owned American hotel chain. They ask why I would choose it when there are character hotels in the city. Perhaps Hilton is not for everyone, but for me, catching the plane out of Fiumicino in a leisurely manner is better done with Hilton than with any hotel in the city. A last night wandering around the city is not worth the comfort and the extra hours of good sleep that I would have at Hilton. Give me Hilton the night before a long flight and I will be fine, thank you.

Unique Qualities: -Directly linked to all terminals in Fiumicino via a skywalk and moving walkway. Time to walk to the aiport from the hotel: 10 minutes if you are a slow walker.

-Even in American standard, the breakfast is enormous.

Hotel Des Artistes: When Reputation Exceeds Value   Check Rates

  • Hotel Des Artistes is a good hotel. Many people like it and rave about it. I stayed there twice, once in the main building and once in the annex. What I found was that the hotel owners and staff are very good marketing people. Over the years, their website has been edited, overhauled, and in some cases complete reinvented. With each change, the site looks and reads better. With each change, the hotel received more good reviews. This is the case of a self-fulfilling prophecy: the image is better than product, but there's enough "buzz" to create positive recommendations from people who may not have personal experience to substantiate their praise.

I do not think the value you receive equals the cost. Yes, it is a good hotel, but not an excellent hotel or one of the best hotels for the money. Neither the location nor the facilities merit the high praise. A hotel that is owned and run by a group of young people who can speak English, a staff that is helpful, and a rooftop terrace is not that hard to find in Rome. The hotel's name projects a certain image that can only be found in a small part of the hotel, the part where the room rate is highest. The rest of the hotel is above average in cleanliness, average in comfort, and below average in upkeep.

For the same rate that Hotel Des Artistes charge in the high season, I can easily find rooms that have the same standard in much better locations. For the same location that houses Hotel Des Artistes, I can easily find rooms that have the same standard for much lower price.

Duca D Alba Hotel: Maximum Comfort For Medium Price   Check Rates

  • Hotel Duca d'Alba has some of the most spacious rooms and bathrooms in all the hotels we have stayed in Rome. At Duca d'Alba, all the rooms have large beds, and the triple room has an extra, good-sized daybed. In the last room we stayed, the bathroom was fitted with very long marble counter that led up to the sink, a large shower with good water pressure, and enough room to swing a cat.

The balcony looks down to a small but lively street and across to Finnegan's, one of my favourite Irish pubs in the city, where you can ask for a good pint of Guinness or a good whiskey, immerse yourself in a good craig, or watch plenty of football games. Next door to the hotel is La Cicala e La Formica (The Cicada and the Ant -- does anyone remember this fable from childhood?), a little candlelit restaurant for a romantic meal. Down the street is Pizzeria Leonina, reputed to be the best pizza-by-the-slice place.

Duca d'Alba is my recommendation for anyone who wants to stay in the oldest and most central district but doesn't want to pay a hefty rate for 4 or 5-star hotel.

Have a good stay, and I'll see you at Finnegan's.

  • Pensione Papā Germano is a good place to stay when all you need is a clean bed at night. For a very low price, you will get a decent sized room with decent bed, clean linen, and a lock on the door to keep your belongings safe. The carpet in the corridor truly needs to be replaced, not because it is worn, but because a bad smell has penetrated it for so long that the most powerful carpet shampoo probably would not help much. On the other hand, one does not linger in the corridor for a long period of time, so I guess it is not a big deal to most people.

The staff at Papā Germano, including the owner, is a jolly bunch of people. The work environment is easy going and the attitude is relaxed. The money exchanged between the hotel and the clients does not seem to be recorded anywhere. If you are the worrisome type, ask for a receipt when you pay, especially since cash is the preferred method of payment there.

If you check out before the office is open in the morning, make sure to practice putting the key into the deposit slot the previous evening. The key holder is big and clunky; there is a very good chance that you will spend a healthy chunk of the early morning hour trying to figure out a way to put it in the narrow slot, all the while your travel companion is anxiously checking the watch. Let me tell you, running like the wind while pulling your luggage all the way to Termini is not a good way to start the day.

  • Hotel Magic answers the call for a simple and economical hotel. In shoulder season, a triple room costs us €70 and comes with good-sized bathroom, big firm beds, clean linen, and a very quiet environment. The hotel shares an inside courtyard with another hotel and a couple of private apartments. The view is of a true Roman working neighbourhood.

What you receive from Hotel Magic is good value for the money. It could be better if it was not for the breakfast, which is quite an operation not on the part of the hotel but from the guests.

Unless the practice has changed since we stayed there last, for breakfast, the receptionist would hand you a slip of paper and send you back to grade school. Let's hold hands, Dorothy, we are going to leave the hotel, so make sure to follow the arrows while taking a walk down the street. After a couple of turns, if you pay attention, you will see a bar on the left hand side, that is where you get your breakfast, and please, do not expect too much. The barman takes the slip of paper from you, opens up a breadbox that contains three kinds of pastry, you indicate your choice, and he gives it to you without a plate.

A small pastry in a napkin and a paper cup of not-very-good coffee – that is a bare bones offer if you ask me. However, a nice clean room, clean shower, clean towels, good and quiet sleep for not much more than €20 per person... that is hostel prices for a good tourist hotel. For that, I think I can forgive the sorry looking breakfast.

Hotel Piemonte: Where People Care   Check Rates

  • Updated by Ciambella on Jun 16, 2006
  • Rome Travel Guide

  • Hotel Piemonte was the first hotel I stayed in Rome. That's one evening I'll never forget: I was alone, exhausted from a long and emotional flight, didn't possess a clear head, was robbed by an illegal cab driver... Although the loss of money was a great deal, the humiliation and self-castigation I bestowed upon myself was even worse.

Giovanni was the night clerk when I checked in. He was fussy enough to make me feel welcome and distant enough to allow me to recovering some of my lost dignity. He told me in no uncertain terms that I could easily call the carabinieri, that bad things happen in Rome, that crying is fine but everything will be better after a good meal.

Giovanni is a pragmatic person. He doesn't like self-pity but he cares about his guests' personal growth. I've stayed at the hotel many times after that night. With each return, I brought Giovanni better news of my life; he remembered all the events and asked all the appropriate questions. He never failed to tell me bad things happen in Rome and that a woman who lives alone is better off in a little town where people don't try to rip her off. In reply, I never failed to tell him there are more good things than bad that happen in Rome and that a woman who lives alone isn't automatically a target to be ripped off. It's a sort of friendly discord we have.

Giovanni is the soul of Piemonte, but the hotel itself fulfils enough requirements for a good stay. Rooms are good sized, bathrooms are clean, beds are firm, and security is good. The room on the bottom floor can be a bit noisy, but the ones upstairs are very quiet. When and if you need anything extra, all you have to do is ask.

I still like Piemonte, although I don't stay there much anymore. Charles worries a tad too much about my safety; he understands I feel comfortable in any environment, but he can't bear to see how the vagrants at the corner greet me like old friend when I pass by. I do miss Giovanni and his best pearl of wisdom: everything is certainly better after a good meal.

Hotel Mozart: Modern Luxury In An Ancient City   Check Rates

  • Located in a small street a few steps from Via del Corso, Hotel Mozart is a modern hotel that caters to travellers with high budget. The annex is a recent addition that contains all luxury rooms, with plasma TVs and private terraces. The rooms in the annex are quite large -- the suite is half the size of my entire house -- but even the ones in the original building are spotlessly clean and of good size. The individual thermostat in each room is an added benefit.

The rooftop terrace is a pleasant place to relax before dinner and the bar downstairs can easily provide you with any kind of drink. The sitting room has beautiful furniture, the fireplace is lit on cold evenings, and a computer with ADSL is available at all times for all guests.

  • We live three hours north of Rome and go to the city very often, but rarely do we stay longer than a couple of days at a time. Much as we love Rome, the speed of a big city wears us out quickly. One September, we broke that rule and stayed for a week straight. A friend who has mobility problem asked for our help, so we came to be with her in her rental flat.

It's a cosy place. The kitchenette and a sofa take up almost the entire downstairs. Beyond that is the bathroom with shower. The circular staircase leads to the bedroom with a large size bed and a wardrobe. The TV is bolted high above so as not to take up any precious room. A nightstand is on one side of the bed; bookshelves are on the other side. The window looks down to Via dei Chiavari and Largo Del Pallaro.

We slept upstairs. It was perfectly fine in the September heat, with the window half-opened and the ceiling fan on. The door downstairs has a partial opening that our friend left open to bring in the breeze. There is also a portable electric heater for the winter.

The kitchenette has folding table and chairs, refrigerator, cupboards, sink, and microwave; the stove has two burners and an oven. You can cook in and save, or step out the door and join the crowd at the famous Der Pallaro or at many other restaurants in the area.

The location is probably the best selling point, with Campo dei Fiori around the corner and Piazza Navona and the Pantheon a few minutes away.

The flat is ideal for two people, but in emergency situation, the foldout sofa can accommodate another person. However, I would not recommend three adults to share quarters that small unless you have no other choice.

An apartment rental usually requires a minimum of one-week stay but there is always room for negotiation. For the price (€450 per week or so per week, everything included) and the best location, this is a deal that is hard to beat.

    Hotel/Pensione Boccaccio: A Small Pension

  • Boccaccio is a small pension that somehow manages to be simultaneously close to and removed from the busy, touristy sights. Inside, there are eight rooms; every one of them is large and clean. Its floor and tables are full of houseplants. Its walls are covered with paintings and sketches, most are done by the owner/artist Patricia.

Patricia doesn't see the pension as a business. It's her home and she maintains it with care. She also carries herself the way a school headmistress does. Although she relies on the aid of a walker, her proud straight back and shoulders emit a certain air that makes you feel the need to behave. (At least I did.)

Patricia offers guests a comfortable and safe ambience, though it's not a fancy place and she doesn't provide breakfast. The pension is just around the corner from Via Del Tritone and Piazza Barberini, a short walk from all the sights.

Roman taxi drivers including the authentic ones are generally crooked. They often travel extra distances, or try to short change you. They were the single worst thing about our stay.

Mom and I often went to Cafe Greco to star gaze. We were most enchanted by the spectre of an aging Maestro Di Chirico ensconsed on the love seat reviewing the drawing portfolios of the eager young artists as he took his morning coffee.
