L'Orso '80: Antipasti Or Bust

Restaurant Name: L'Orso '80
People have talked about this restaurant for years. Tourists flock to it and the locals take their families there. The restaurant looks small from the outside, but the two rooms inside are large and tastefully decorated.
Antipasti misti is the only thing that made the restaurant famous. The bigger your group, the more food comes out of the kitchen. It's a seemingly endless array of dishes, all antipasti: melanzane, mozzarella di bufala, prosciutto and melon, carciofi, finocchio, fagiolini, spinaci, etc. The quantity is overwhelming, but the quality is not high. Some dishes are tasty, while others are bland; the only thing they have in common is the low calorie content. You don't feel heavy after the buffet, but you also don't feel as if you have eaten a good meal either. It is an acceptable place for dinner if your group does not have a specific idea of what to eat. It is a fun thing to try, but not a meal to repeat.
I have always thought that it is not a good thing to cook food in bulk daily. After having been to L'Orso, now I am more certain of that.
Favorite Dish: The housewine is a very good bianco Agrospino. Red is from the wine list only.

Augusto: My Fave

Restaurant Name: Augusto
Located in the quiet Piazza de' Renzi in Trastevere, Augusto is a family-run restaurant that has consistently provided excellent, genuine Roman food to the neighbourhood for years. The menu is classic, the food changes according to the day of the week (fish on Tuesday and Friday, gnocchi on Thursday, etc), ingredients are always fresh, and the price is modest.
No reservations are accepted. In the summer, prepare for long waits, especially for outside tables. Despite the lack of ambience (or actually, because of it), this is one of my favourite restaurants in the city.
Favorite Dish: All the classic dishes (carbonara, amatriciana, ossobuco, carciofi) are excellent. Cacio e pepe, the simple signature Roman pasta dish is perhaps the best in the city here.
The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Restaurant Name: L'Archetto di Fontana di Trevi
There are 105 items on the spaghetti section of the menu. All spaghetti.
Please don’t ask for fusilli, vermicelli, rigatoni, capellini, fettuccine, linguine, tagliatelle, campanelle, farfalle, or penne. There is none of those. Although you can order other dishes such as pizza, fish, and meat, when it comes to pasta, you have only two choices here: spaghetti or bust.
Low price, good portion, this is a good place if you travel with children or on a budget. The restaurant is large and always busy so do not expect any attention from the waitstaff.
One thing to remember: Make sure the waiter knows you would like to have your change back. When we paid the bill, the waiter assumed the rest of the money (15% of the bill) was the tip. He took the notes, thanked us, and never came back with the change. I have found this kind of assumption and/or expectation exist in quite a few restaurants in Rome where tourists make up a large part of clientele. The waitstaffs who deal with tourists daily -- especially good tipper Americans who are not aware that service charge is already included in the bill -- take it for granted that they earn a gratuity just for bringing out the food.
The restaurant is close on Mondays.
Favorite Dish: Some dishes are better than others. The bruschette are very good, the tomato-base sauces are decent, the cream-base sauces are passable, the pesto is mediocre.

Antico Cafe Greco: "The Only Place To Sit And Wait For The End"

Restaurant Name: Antico Caffè Greco
The oldest (established 1760) and the most aristocrat café in the city, Caffè Greco doesn’t need to compete with anyone else. It has earned an honor place in history centuries ago and its legend is as mystical as the personalities who visited it.
Imagine an international drawing room where everybody who was somebody gathered to leave his footprints, his creations, and even a large part of his life. If you can imagine that place in your mind, you would recognize it when you see Antico Caffè Greco.
The list of Caffè Greco’s habitués is the Who’s Who of Eternal City and the world at large: Afro, Berlioz, Buffalo Bill, D'Annunzio, Dickens, Fazzini, Goethe, Goldoni, Hawthorne, Humperdinck, Keats, Levi, Liszt, Lord Byron, Mafai, Mendelssohn, Pascarella, Petrassi, Sgambati, Stendhal, Thackeray, Twain, Vespignani, Wagner, Wells, etc.
Rossini composed here, Gogol wrote Dead Souls in the back room, and Hans Christian Andersen lived upstairs. Cardinal Pecci was a regular here before he became Pope Leone XIII.
One doesn’t stand at the counter here, because this is not a bar. In Antico Caffè Greco, one sits on upholstered chairs and sips one’s drink while contently waiting for the end. (“II Caffè Greco è l'unico posto al mondo dove sedersi e aspettare la fine." Giorgio De Chirico)

Comments for Ciambella about Rome | | | | |
Paisleypaul Sun Jun 7, 2009 11:30 UTC Tremendous Rome pages, really like how easy it is for us all to discover our own little niches for cafes and ristorante. Can't believe it's been nearly 3 years - we'll be back by ferragosto | jbrown8512 Sun Apr 12, 2009 18:42 UTC I have seen similar. This is their "job" and no human kindnesses are included. They are afraid you'll get a picture. | HotCarpaccio Fri Jan 2, 2009 11:16 UTC Roman taxi drivers including the authentic ones are generally crooked. They often travel extra distances, or try to short change you. They were the single worst thing about our stay. | mareilla Fri Dec 12, 2008 10:57 UTC Mom and I often went to Cafe Greco to star gaze. We were most enchanted by the spectre of an aging Maestro Di Chirico ensconsed on the love seat reviewing the drawing portfolios of the eager young artists as he took his morning coffee. |
