Unforgettable Serenissima

by Librex - last update: Jun 9, 2004

I waited for a long time before I decided to go to Venice. It always seemed like I had some other places to visit first, other people I wanted to meet, as if I somehow feared that Venice would disappoint me. I kept it in the back of my mind, much like you add trivial tasks to your ever changing to-do list. I once even considered that La Serenissima would forever be my 'mythical destination', a place I knew existed somewhere but without ever reaching it..

But now, back from a week spent in the Veneto region, I can truly say that all of you fellow travellers should stop by Venice at least once in your life. It is unique, not like anything else you will ever see. It has the perfect balance between charm, culture, romance and fun. Each brick, each stone, fits perfectly in this jewel case of a city for you to enjoy all the pearls it contains. And this treasure will only be yours if you take time to explore the narrow streets, peek into the dazzling churches and spend afternoons having some cichetis and a glass of wine..

So how long should I be staying in Venice?

For a first visit, I would be tempted to say at least 3 days. So you can still visit the islands (Burano, Torcello) as well as the main monuments (Palazzo Duccale, main churches, museum, etc). 3 full days sound like a good start.

A week may be exhausting if you stay in Venice itself so you should reserve sometime for daytrips to Padua or Verona. And as accomodation is quite expensive in Venice, it's probably even better to have a bit more than daytrips in the Veneto region towns and just sleep there.

But isnt Venice a place for very rich people?

In some ways, it is :)

It's not a budget-oriented trip. There are ways to help your wallet survive its shock with the life around the Grand Canal, as some of my tips will try to prove, but going to Venice requires that you bend some budget rules . But as you will certainly see, it is worth every penny..

Pros:"There is no place like Home... and Venice."
Cons:"Traumatic experience for the wallet..."
In A Nutshell:"'Loving' a city takes a whole new definition in Venice.."
