In awe of it all

Fulfilling a childhood dream

The rebel pharaoh Akhenaten, Alexandria Museum
As a child, I have always been fascinated with the pharaohs and pyramids of ancient Egypt. I would concoct stories about the lives of pharaohs and their quest for glory and immortality, based loosely on Biblical tales I've learned in school.

The advent of cable TV and computers brought this fascination to new heights. I wouldn't dare miss any of Discovery Channel's or National Geographic's features on pharaonic Egypt. Nor leave any stone unturned in devising strategies for the PC game Pharaoh.

The trip to Egypt was a fulfillment of a childhood dream. And yes, the whole experience was exactly what I expected it to be - especially standing before the Great Pyramids of Giza, speechless and overwhelmed. Nothing could have ever prepared me for the encounter - no matter how much Discovery Channel I've watched or read books on the subject.

And then there was Luxor just bursting with ancient monuments. And Aswan where the Nile is most beautiful. And Abu Simbel with Ramses II's imposing temple. And that of Isis in Philae, exquisite and filled with an aura that is both romantic and divine.

I could go on and on but words could never truly describe the experience of actually being in these places and experiencing in reality the full glory of ancient Egypt.

Awesome!

Pros:"Ancient Egypt represents one of man's crowning achievements"
Cons:"The constant hassle for baksheesh is taxing and could sometime leave a bad taste."
In A Nutshell:"Definitely should be on everyone's list of must-visit destinations."
