"Swept up in a vortex of art and history" Vatican City by Tijavi

Forget the scandals - at least for a minute or two. Instead, imagine yourself standing in the midst of all that is true, everything that is good - and every tiny bit that is beautiful. Picture yourself in the labyrinth that is the Vatican Museums, in the midst of some of the world's most treasured works of art; or on top of St. Peter's dome - with the city and world (or in its more dramatic Latin translation, urbi et orbi) - literally at your feet; or inside the Sistine Chapel battling for scarce space with thousand other tourists, yet feeling so sublime within; or inside St Peter's along with a throng of devotees and pilgrims and plain-curious tourists; or on a clear Wednesday morning during the Pope's public audience day, standing next to a devout Catholic, so overwhelmed with emotion as tears roll down her cheek upon seeing her beloved pontiff.
Such is the power of religion. Such is the Vatican experience that makes even non-Catholics utter "thank God for religion."

Wonderfully interesting page, with really good photo's! I wish I could have seen this, but it was a day of strikes in Rome, so missed out!
Great opening photo! Actually, fantastic photos overall. Reading your page is a far more pleasant experience than visiting the Vatican with the crowds of tourists!!!!
Yes, I think I should go :-) Even if it will be crowded. And have to climb the cupola, the views look indeed magic. Love the 3D effect of the mosaic angel (at the cupola inside tip). Oh, and St. Ubaldo is among the 144 statues, did you know that?
Thanks for your interesting story and practical tips....
Fabulous pictures. Thanks for posting it.I was unknown from it.Sistine chapel is great.
