Unsinkable beauty

by Tijavi - last update: Dec 19, 2008

Somewhere near Palazzo Lezze, Cannaregio
Venice is said to be a sinking city. Global warming and the ravages of time have both been cited to have had long-lasting damaging effects on this city, considered one of the most unique in the world.

The reports and dire predictions may contain an ounce of truth in them, but the only sinking feeling I experienced upon seeing Venice is a beautiful one: it was love at first sight (pardon the cliché). It was hard not to fall in love with Venice's gothic structures no matter how graffiti-riddled they were; with the stately palazzi on the Grand Canal even if some had been inevitably doomed to their watery graves; with the unexpected surprises hidden between Venice's labyrinthine alleys; with the delicious food offered by many excellent restaurants even if we need to pay an arm and a leg for them; with the amount of art and culture that abound like pearly oysters clinging upon the wooden piers.

Venice is a city that defies expectations - and explanation. I was initially hesitant to come fearing that the place may not live up to the hype and the hyperboles. It was touristy alright, but that was expected. What I didn't expect is how it captivated my imagination and curiosity. The more I dig deeper into Venice's history and unearth the intriguing tales that lay buried within its historical buildings, the more I would love to go back.

Why am I not at all surprised that you liked San Zanipolo most? It is a magic church :-) Oh and it was allowed to take photos in Gesuiti? I love your B&W photo of Canal Grande and oh my... I must go back very soon!!

Excellent Venice page! Venice is such a romantic city with charm and ellegance of the palazzos, piazzas, churches and the Grand Canal. Venice is high on our list to visit in Italy. We hope to visit the city sooner rather than later. ~ho & pang
