I really never intended to stay here, but a rare case of "serious" sandstorm prompted Emirates to cancel (at the last minute - we were already at pre-departure) our flight to Dubai. We were brought to this hotel to spend the night, and the whole place was a pleasant surprise, even to some Alexandrians who never thought that such a hotel could exist along the Alex-Marsa Matrouh road.
The whole property is a 5-star resort with a very large pool and a beautiful beach facing the Mediterranean. The rooms are clean, and standard-Hilton, and the service good. The only sad part is the fact that we were unable to use the outdoor facilities because of the raging sandstorm outside. So, I spent the whole day cocooned inside my room watching movies on cable TV.
More than housing stranded airline passengers, the whole resort seems ideal for short weekend breaks from Alex and Cairo. Internationally, though, it may have to face a lot of competition from other areas in Egypt like Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada, although the government is now stressing development of tourism assets along Egypt's extensive Mediterranean coast.
