Horus Hotel: The not-so-horrible Horus Hotel

  • Forget the dingy room, the dusty carpet, the noisy air-conditioning unit, the loud belly-dancing music from the nightclub upstairs, and the scary lift. With its large rooms and clean bathroom (although the drains could use some clearing), and best of all - grand view of the Nile - all these at less than USD 10/night, the Horus Hotel is not a bad option at all.

I didn't make any advance reservations as it's slack season. First was quoted EGP 50, but managed to bring it down to EGP 40. The rate includes breakfast - and you could ask them to pack one for you in case you're visiting Abu Simbel. Staff are helpful and friendly.

Unique Qualities: One of the best views of the Nile if budget constraints preclude you from staying at Oberoi or Old Cataract Hotel.

Sofitel Old Cataract: Aswan's most historic hotel

  • Aswan Sofitel Old Cataract
  • Old Cataract Hotel

  • Now managed by the Sofitel chain (part of the Accor group), the Old Cataract Hotel is arguably Aswan's most historic, partly because Agatha Christie did some writing here and the hotel was used in some scenes in the movie adaptation of her famous novel Death on the Nile. I never had the chance to stay here, so I can't share anything about the hotel's service and facilities. The terrace, though, has excellent views of the Nile and Elephantine island, and is a perfect place for a drink after a tiring day of sightseeing. Dress up a bit if you're not staying as management had become selective about admitting non-guest diners.

Unique Qualities: Fantastic views of the Nile and Elephantine island.

A very interesting and useful page about this beautiful city and its area. We could almost meet there (I've been to Aswan this April). Great shots of the High Dam, Philae Temple and felucca with flowers. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting tip! I m planning my trip to Egypt and I wonder how should I arrange the Abusimbel tour. I arrive early in the morning to Aswan, is it reasonable to buy on the spot a tour for the 11am convoy? Any suggestions for prebooking?
