Missing her terribly | The calmer side of Manila |
Please indulge me. Allow me to be selfish, possessive - and own her - my Manila. She is my muse, my lover, my poison.
I was on the cusp of manhood when I first met her. Under her tutelage, she filled my mind with knowledge, emboldened my spirit, and molded my character. It was never easy. I was presented with challenge after challenge. In the end of it all, I emerged a man - a better man.
We did have our fun moments. She gifted me with wonderful friends whom I shared wonderful times with. And who could forget those late night outs, pig outs, or just chilling out in her airconditioned malls? Parties, movies, Sunday afternoon pow-wows - name it, she had them all.
But she had a temper, too. Endless rainy days, monstrous jams, thugs hiding in dark corners, grime, inadequate infrastructure crumbling under the weight of her 20 million or so wards. And in some areas, poverty - dehumanizing poverty.
I just felt she deserved a break - at least from me. We thought we'll give each other some space, and so I left her. And now I am starting to realize the longer I've left her, the more I long for her.
