Entrance to Indochina Spirit - Luang Prabang

Entrance to Indochina Spirit

Indochina Spirit: Good Lao food in a converted villa

Had a wonderful feast of Lao specialties -- banana flower salad, fritters (Mekong seaweed, calamari, spring rolls, stuffed eggplant), prawn green curry, and all for about $12 in a nice courtyard of a villa that used belong to the Royal Surgeon. Good service and good food. What's not to like?

Favorite Dish: Banana Flower salad, feel the lime and limegrass explode in your mouth. Goes well with the sticky rice.

Address: Ban Vat That 50-51

Comparison: about average

Directions: Walk west along Sisavangvong until you reach the area of the fountain on Bat Vat That. It's near a very nice hotel (Maison Souvannaphoum?) and is on the north side of the street.

Seaweed, sausage and sticky rice - Luang Prabang
Anywhere: Seaweed, sausage and sticky rice

LP is famous for a sort of fried seaweed (or riverweed), sausage and of course, sticky rice. The seaweed is a bit underwhelming, really. You should be able to find these offerings in most restaurants. The chili paste BTW, was absolutely delicious!

Nice colonial building... - Luang Prabang

Nice colonial building...

Three Elephant Cafe/Tamnak Lao: Wonderful Lao food

3 Elephant is right on the main street of LP. It's housed in a really nice colonial house with traditional furnishings and a patio to boot. In other, really oozing with ambience. They have a good lao menu, with most dished at the $5 mark. They have 2 set meals, one at $8 and another at $10. I had the $8 one and it came with a veg/pork soup, chicken/pork fitters, a curry, sticky rice and a coconut/banana/sticky rice fritter dessert, and tra/coffee. Quite delicious really! Highy recommended.

Address: Tanon Sakkarin

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: It's along the main street which starts out as Sakkarin and then turns into Sisangvavong. The resturant is right across from the Hotel Villa Santi.
