When entering the Forbidden City, try to enter from the Meridian Gate and use the central archway because it will allow you to experience the best view when entering the palace since in the past the central archway was used only by the Emperor.
Walk from the South straight on towards the North and you will pass by all the throne rooms where you can take a peek into the ornate artefacts and thrones in each sections.
If you have the time try to visit the Forbidden City yourself as it will give you more time to venture into the other quarters. Travelling in a tour group will just limit your travel to the central section of the walkway without any chance of truly venturing the other parts of the palace.

Do take a rickshaw trip around the perimeters of the Forbidden City and bargain and choose the route you want the cyclist to take you around. Besides the hutongs you can see around the Forbidden City complex, it will also allow you to experience the size of the complex and do give around 1-2 hours for this trip.
