Capitol of the Middle Kingdom Welcome to Beijing, the cultural, educational, scientific and political centre of China. Translated to English, it means the Northern Capitol. Being the capital of the Ming, Qing and ROC and PRC, Beijing is where you should venture if you want to see the past grandeur of past and present China.
One unique design feature of this city is the ancient square like grid which has been maintained and kept since the Ming dynasty. In the center of the whole city lies the Forbidden City, a huge complex of palaces which used to house the Emperor and his families. Outside the Palace itself is the Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, and the Great Hall of the People, the parliamentary building of China's National People's Congress.
Besides the Forbidden City, there are other worthy attractions like the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, Beijing's night markets around the city and traditional courtyard houses of old China. A trishaw ride around the Forbidden City compound would also make a memorable experience.
Some of China's most popular attractions like the Great Wall is a few hours drive from Beijing. In addition, there is the Ming Imperial Tombs which also makes a worthy visit for those interested in the historical aspect. |
