Before we left for Venice, I bought a Lonely Planet guide (off eBay of course), and followed several of the walks included in their "things to see and do" section. This was a very useful excercise and filled up our 3 days in Venice better than I had expected. It took us into many of the quieter areas and the maps in the back meant we didn't get lost (well only a couple of times).
