Belize in a Week!

by EGitan - last update: Mar 6, 2005

Paradise Island

Caye Cauker Beach
From the Jungles of Belize to the white sand beaches of the islands, this country has a lot to offer. Relaxation, outdoor adventure, diving you can do it all in a week.
We flew into Belize City (I wouldn't suggest hanging out there too long) caught a single engine plane to the island ($40) per person. You can also take a boat but will take you several hours.
The two major islands San Pedro and Caye Cauker are very layed back. Caye Cauker is the smaller of the two and offer little in terms of entertainment but does have a quaint little bar and grill. Stay a night on Caye Cauker and take the boat to San Pedro (maybe 45 minutes). Spend a few days driving around the island on a golf cart ($30 a day), go diving or snorkling which can be set up by most of the hotels. Or if you have the time take a boat out and dive the blue hole (3 hours) if it is not too windy. Enjoy some seafood or a night out at Fido's bar and grill for some dancing and Belikin beer.

Hanging out on the Islands

Spend your days snorkling or enjoy some deep sea fishing. Some days can be too windy and the guides wont take you out. In that case, go chat with the locals.......most of which were nice. Don't buy from the beach vendors......selling faux jaguar teeth necklaces. I learned the hard way when the thing broke in two the week after we returned!!

Explore the Jungle

Take the boat back to Belize City and go rent a car and drive to the jungle. lonely planet's guide to Belize has a list of car rentals. That way you can explore the jungle on your own. Whether you are roughing in a jungle camp filled with poison asps or rivers with biting fish, or sleeping comfortably in a jungle bungalow, you will sleep better than ever with the sounds of the jungle. There are many outdoor adventure companies which do jungle trecks or rafting........Take the drive to Tikal in Guatemala. But don't get lost.........and get back to the border before dark. There are a few confusing turns on the way back which are difficult to see at dark.
Enjoy the hospitality of the Belizean people and the delicious food!

Cons:"Poisonous critters and can be difficult to get around without a car."
In A Nutshell:"Go Now!"

Sounds like your accomodations were quite the adventure themselves! You have some great shots, I'm just back from Belize and miss the sunshine already.

Great tip on snorkelling with the sharks & rays. You really found some interesting places to stay in the jungle - I have to explore the mainland more on my next trip here! I plan on coming back again and again!
