Things To Do: 38 Mile Thrill

  • Take the bicycle tours from Haleakala! It was an amazing experience. I recommend the sunrise tour. They will pick you up from your hotel early (about 2:30am), but it is well worth it. They need to have everyone picked up, get the equipment (bicycles, rain gear, helmets, gloves), and drive you to the top of the volcano by sunrise. You then have plenty of time to walk around, take pictures, and get comfortable on your bicycle. Be prepared - it is extremely cold at the top. You need to dress in layers. Your group will then start the way down, single file. It is a 38 mile downhill ride that starts at 10,000' elevation and returns you to sea level. You do reach some pretty high speeds, so you should feel comfortable on a bicycle You will remain with a guide the entire time. Plenty of photo ops, and a stop for breakfast included in the price.

Things To Do: Bird's Eye View
  • Tip Rating:
  • See the island from a helicopter! Several companies offer helicopter tours around the islands. I selected Blue Hawaiian because of their good safety record (always important). We were not disappointed. They offer tours ranging from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. They can also be personalized, if you would prefer something different. You will see valleys and waterfalls that you would never be able to experience from the ground. I was a little nervous before take off, but it was really fun. I would definitely do it again.

Things To Do: Up Up and Away
  • Tip Rating:
  • Parasailing is a popular activity in most tropical spots. Everyone should try it at least once. Get harnessed in, and sail above the clouds being pulled by a boat. Single and double harnesses available. The company we chose, flys from December-May. They aren't allowed to take the boats out when the whales are visiting. They offer a choice of a 7 minute 400' line, or a 10 minute 800' line. It's a very smooth, quiet ride, and an awesome view.

  • A beautiful resort offering guests everything you could possibly want or need on your vacation. Spa, golf, tennis, art collection, shopping, dining, and of course...the beautiful ocean. If you are not staying here, it is still worth the drive to come check it out. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. Come have lunch, take a walk, and enjoy.

Things To Do: Can't Miss It

Things To Do: Ride The Train
  • Tip Rating:
  • For those with younger travelers in your group, they might enjoy a ride on the Sugar Cane Train. Ride the locomotive on a 6 mile historical tour of Old Hawaii. Your conductor will explain the history and days of the trains hauling the sugar cane from the fields.

Things To Do: A Glass of Vino
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pack a picnic, and buy a bottle of wine from the Tedeschi Winery. A one hour drive from Kaanapali, the winery is a nice day trip. Tastings are offered daily from 9-5, or enjoy one of the two tours offered. Beautiful, historic grounds make for a nice outing to Upcountry Maui.
