  • I walked into the square from the vaporetto stop. My friend and I were speechless as we rounded the corner into the piazza. St Mark's is absolutely breathtaking. Even after seeing dozens and dozens of pictures of it, are you prepared for the size and beauty. It is definitely worth the wait in line to go inside. Be sure and go into the presbytery to see the golden altar screen. It is set with 300 emeralds, 300 sapphires, 400 garnets, 100 amethysts, and 1300 pearls.

Be aware of the dress code: no shorts, bare arms, or shoulders.

  • Each room you enter in this palace is more beautiful and incredible than the last. You will see numerous paintings by Tintoretto and Veronese. The tour continues into the Council of Ten where decisions were made on who was to be decapitated. You will wander throught the private apartments of the doges and into the Grand Council chamber. In the chamber you will see the world's largest oil painting done by Tintoretto. You may also choose to follow the tour into cell blocks. These cell blocks housed the prisoners after the Council of Ten made their decisions.

The palace tour is very beautiful and a must see, but be prepared for many stairs.

  • When touring the Doge Palace, you will have the opportunity to cross the Bridge of Sighs. The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge Palace with the Palazzo delle Prigioni. Here is where you will see the cell blocks, and imagine the victims forced across it to face torture and possible death.

  • For 6 euros you can take the elevator to the top of the bell tower. Rebuilt after it's collapse in 1902, you can see beautiful views of the city below.

  • Leave some time in your schedule to visit the Rialto Bridge. The Rialto was built between 1588-1591, to permanently replace the previous boat and wooden bridges. It remained the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot until the Accademia Bridge was built in 1854.

The bridge is filled with stores containing Venice glass, linens, and crafts.
