Public Transit in Budapest

The heart of the Budapest public transit system is a compact 3 line underground system with connection at the Deak Ference station. Line 1 is yellow, the oldest on the European continent, running between Vorosmarty ter and the City Park, with many tourists. Line 2 is red, the busiest and deepest line, crossing under the Danube. It services among other things the 2 main railway stations as well as the Castle Hill District and the suburban line to Szentendre. Line 3 is blue, running North-South. The cars on 2 and 3 are similar to Russian cars in Moscow reflecting the time of construction of the lines.

The subways are fast, clean, and run frequently. Signage should only be this good in New York. There are multiple variants of the one trip ticket - three stop, five stop, transfer, whatnot. A hopeless morass for those untutored in Hungarian. Better to buy a one, three, or longer day pass and just ride. The passes are good on the extensive 30 line tram system as well as busses anywhere in the city limits, including the HEV lines to the city limits. As described in my warnings tip, this is the only type of ticket a tourist should buy.
