Krung Thep - the Thai name for Bangkok The name Bangkok recalls a small port and commercial center which supplied the capital city of Ayutthaya. When the capital was taken by Burmese forces in the late 18th Century, the Thai capital was moved to Thonburi across the Chao Phya River from today's Bangkok center. Some years later King Rama I built his palace on the site of the current city and named it Krung Thep, the City of Angels. The original village of Bangkok no longer exists. |
