Off The Beaten Path: Walk Along the River - Sweet Lullaby
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Neustadt side of the Elbe River is lined by a largely unimproved meadow allowing great vistas of the Old City. It is bisected by an asphalt bicycle and strolling path with cafes, beer and wine gardens, and flower gardens along the developed side and unimproved grassland bisected by unpaved paths going down to the river edge and offered a peaceful stroll among family groups with children and dogs as well as those jogging and sitting along the benches. In summer, the meadow is a popular gathering place with movies and outdoor concerts. Near the mouth of a small tributary were assorted ducks and geese, nearer the August Bridge a hot air balloon, and beyond the bridge near the Japanese Palace the panorama made famous in the paintings of Canaletto (actually Bernardo Bellotto, a student ). Dresden is one of the greenest cities in Germany, and this central swath of nature was a welcome respite for a very leisurely stroll.
