Need to get going on something here on VT. I do travel, not nearly as much as the top members here, but I' m a work in progress.

Milford is my hometown. Longest shoreline (LI Sound) of any town in CT - 17 miles. Some public beaches and while the water is not crystal clear, it is better than it was in the 70's. Lots of recreation - fishing, boating available.

I found this link recently. It is a bit outdated, but there are some pics.

Milford was voted one of the top 10 places to live by New Yorker mag. perhaps in 2003. Growth in houseing has been up there and many farms are now converted to single family homes. First town in New Haven county, which is next to Fairfield county($$). Housing prices are going up as ppl just can not afford the prices in Ffld cnty - where in some towns the avg price is >$500-600k - OUCH! Beachfront houses in Milford are now over $1M.

I live in the Woodmont section of town. We are a borough - a government entity - with a "mayor" of sorts and a board. See woodmontday.org for the government and other WCRA stuff that I volunteer for. Woodmont had several hotels back in its hayday as a vacation spot for ppl all the way from NY. Trolley service from New Haven brought summer crowds.

Downtown Milford public dock has been a sucess at attracting out of town ppl for overnight stays. It is a destination!

Summer (August) Oyster Festival is always a large event and draws up to 30k ppl.

Downtown is smallish, but in the summer has several outdoor bar patio's that attract "happy" crowds. That is sometimes a bad thing as in any place with drinking, ppl can be unrulely - to put it politely. Not a big issue, but like any other city adjustments are being made.

Downtown is quaint and the Bed and Breakfast, Rainbow Garden, should not be missed - wonderful foods!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Beach, LI Sound access, Small town feeling, recreation, Oyster Festival
  • Cons:Post Rd on a Sat. afternoon or near a shopping holiday - Uugh!, much farmland is now track homes
  • In a nutshell:1st town in New Haven County has a small town feel still with > 50K residents
