A perfect time to visit Prague

by stamporama - last update: Oct 1, 2008

Last one out of the plane door is a nerd!
My wife and I didn't plan to go to Europe this year (2008) but since her parents wanted to go on a pilgrimage to Lourdes and Fatima, it was incumbent upon the 2 of us to accompany them because of their advanced age. But then I thought that since we were in the vicinity, we might as well drop by the 2 cities I've always wanted to visit -- Prague and Vienna. The timing was also right because there were 2 events to be held in the 2 cities a week apart, both of which I wanted to attend. Can't get better than this, right? But it didn't end there.

Since Dec. 2007, the Czech Republic was included in the Schengen visa treaty so the need to get a separate visa was done away with. Great, huh?
Our Lady of the Victorious church
An important religious icon in the city was the shrine of the Child Jesus located at the Our Lady of the Victorious church. For Catholics, this was regarded as a pilgrimage site which was why groups from different countries purposely go here not just for vacation but for veneration as well.

I've read that Prague is one of a handful of cities that escaped wide-spread destruction during WWII so the world is indeed fortunate that we have a pre-war colonial example of how a European urban center looked back then.
Of course, the reason for visiting (if not the ONLY reason) was to view the idyllic scene of the Charles Bridge spanning the Vltava river with the Prague castle perched on the hill at the background. The magic of how an old bridge could attract so many people the world over is indeed mystifying. Plus the thrill of crossing it despite crossing countless others in the past.

If you're not bored yet, please continue on with my travelogues!
