Bulgaria-little bit of this, little bit of that

by zlatiq - last update: Jan 7, 2007

Simple but beatiful and fun !!!

simple but beautiful
For a small country we have a lot to offer: old capitals and ruins and fortresses and towns, mountains, beaches, people who work hard and play hard.

Tourism is not so developed as in other countries since we're just begining to open our borders (which is both good and bad).

The pottery from the photo i correlate to Bulgaria..it's made of something simple (not gold/diamonds) but it's colorful and beatiful and exquisite.

My favorite places in Bulgaria

I'll try to list some of my favorite places in the chapter "things to do".

Other tips

I came across a short article (slweekly ) on why we bulgarians shake our heads back and forth for yes and nod up and down for no. It was interesting for me,because i really dont know why we do this. And i dont know how this missionary got the info bellow...but i thought its interesting:)

An LDS missionary who served in Bulgaria was asked if he had any communication problems, and there is his answer.
"Did you experience any communication barriers?"
"....In Bulgaria, people shake their heads back and forth to say “yes” and up and down to say “no.” It takes a couple months to get used to that, and then a couple more to get used to the opposite when getting home. The reason is because when Bulgarians were under Turkish slavery, the Turks would put knives under the chins of priests and ask them whether or not they believed in Christ. A nod “yes” would mean a knife in their throat. The priests at Rila Monastery took an oath to shake their heads back and forth for “yes” from then on, thus protecting their lives and ultimately their religion in their country. To honor them, Bulgarians continue to do so today. It was meaningful to me to see that example of others protecting their beliefs and religion."

Hi there! I also want to visit Bulgaria --- looks beautiful, but my friend says there's a lot of credit card overcharging -- did you encounter any? Thanks...Greetings from AZ, Norman :)

That story about the Bulgarian girls jumping off a cliff reminded me of a similar story I'd heard in Kirkjubaejarklastar, Iceland. In that case, it was a bunch of nuns who freaked because someone saw them bathing in a stream. :) Nice page.

Great tips and photos. Bungy jumping off the bridge in your photo definitely looks extreme! Best from New Jersey, Bill
