Ieper Travel Guide: 464 reviews and 1,301 photos
Of all the towns in Flanders, Ypres suffered most from the bitter stalemate of World War I. More than 300,000 Allied soldiers were killed here during the four years of fighting that left the medieval town flattened; it took almost 50 years to rebuild the cathedral. The southern part of the town is flanked by a wide moat and steep stone ramparts that are topped by pleasant gardens.

Fortifications of Ieper
The coat of arms consists of a two-barred red cross (Cross of Lorraine) above a second cross of vair that is derived from the govenors of Ieper, the arms are supported by a lion of Vlaanderen carrying a connon which is a reference to the battles of the First World War. Since 1925 the town is entitled to use the French and British military crosses below the shield, which also symbolise the heavy fighting around the city during the four years.

Cemeteries are always interesting to walk around, but those war ones are so sad!
Thanks for visiting my Ieper page, Graham.
1993 is indeed long time ago. The museum is totally renewed and now you can get a cycling map with an English translation to cycle along the most important places (Peace route). Last Post is unforgettable on 11th November!
