Ostend - Oostende - Oostende

Ostend is the largest city on the Belgian coast and is a busy fishing and commercial port and also a terminal for crossings to and from Dover. The busy quay is a popular tourist attraction. Local fishermen landing their catch, the auctions, fish stalls and long line of restaurants all create a lively atmosphere. There are also over five and a half miles of sandy beaches and a promenade with many shops, bars and restaurants.

Ostend is known as the “City by the Sea”

The Coat of Arms consists of a shield with 3 keys and a chevron. In 1838 the supporters were added consisting of a merman and a mermaid to show the importance of the harbour. According to legend Ostend received as arms a key in 1267 from Margareth of Byzantium, married to the Count of Vlaanderen, the key is the symbol of St. Peter, patron saint of the city. The meaning of the chevron is also not known. The arms were granted in 1819.

The municipal flag of Ostend is horizontally divided red-yellow. The flag was adopted by the Council in 1985 and confirmed by the Executive of Flanders in the same year.
