Town Hall - Rådhus - Copenhagen
Town Hall - Rådhus Rådhuspladsen - Town hall square Review

The Town Hall was built between 1892 and 1905 and is based partly on the Italian Renaissance and partly on medieval Danish architecture. The tower is 106m/350ft high and the building is adorned with sculptures and paintings. Above the main entrance is a statue of Bishop Absalon in gilded copper and in the Great Hall stand busts of Martin Nyrop, the architect who designed the building, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, Hans Christian Andersen and the physicist Niels Bohr.

The World Clock at the main entrance was designed and constructed by Jens Olsen in 1955 and is so exact that it's accurate to within half a second every 300 years. Climb the tower for an impressive view, but take care as it’s 300 steps.

Tivoli Gardens is a popular amusement park and should be a must on everyone list of things to do. Founded in 1843 it is a beautiful park with lanterns in the trees that create a unique atmosphere. It has a wealth of high-class restaurants and stages for music and theatre. While the park is open during the day time, it is at it’s best during the evening. A great place for people of all ages. The amusement park is full with life during the summer.

Amalienborg Palace - Copenhagen
Amalienborg Palace Amalienborg Palace Review

Amalienborg is the winter residence of Queen Margrethe, her husband Prince Henrik and their son the Crown Prince Frederik. The flag bearing her colours and coat of arms fly whenever the Queen is at home. The royal palace is not one, but really four different palaces flanking a square. The palaces were built by four noble families in the middle of the 18th century on the direct orders of King Frederik V. The King needed a new royal palace but didn't want to pay so the families were given tax immunity for 40 years as a token of their services to the crown.

In 1794 the royal family moved into the four palaces around the square, which is considered to be one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in Europe. The French artist Saly sculptured the statue of Frederik V that is situated in the middle of the square.

Whilst we were there a gate opened and we were nearly knocked down by a speeding car containing the late Queen Ingrid, the Queen Mother.

Little Mermaid - Copenhagen

Little Mermaid

Little Mermaid Little Mermaid Review

In the water near Langelinie is Copenhagen's best-known attraction the tiny statue of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue), which is literally the size of a young girl. Nothing can prepare you for how small the statue really is, and how remote it is from the rest of the city. Photographs make it look more exciting than it actually is. The Little Mermaid was sculptured in bronze by Edward Eriksen (1876-1959) using his wife as the model.
