Lille the capital of French Flanders is the fourth largest city in France and was one of medieval Europe's great cities. It is known as the city of the arts and there are many different museums to see. The architecture is diverse and the city has retained many of its old buildings. This 11th-century Flemish town was bounced between France, Austria, Spain and finally back to France in 1667 when the Sun King, Louis XIV, triumphantly captured the city.
Lille is the perfect destination for a short break, the fun is mingling with the locals, shopping in the cobbled and gabled old town, and browsing the restaurant menus along rue de Gand. The best way to explore Lille is on foot, so wear comfortable shoes. Any cultural exhibitions out of the centre can be reached by tube. |
