Dorset is one of England’s smallest counties; it is rich in scenery and historical sites it is a largely rural county with many small villages, few large towns and no cities. Dorset was once known as Dorsetshire and is located in South-West England with a number of popular seaside resorts along nearly ninety miles of coastline. Almost half of Dorset's countryside is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has the highest number of conservation areas in England and is home to five per cent of England's protected ancient monuments.

Must see attractions include the Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Swanage Railway, Monkey World and a host of castles, manor houses and gardens.

The county town of Dorset is Dorchester.

People who live in or who come from Dorset are called Dorsetines

The flag of Dorset features a white cross with a red border on a golden background, the colours are used in Dorset County Council's coat of arms with the red and white being used in recognition of the English flag and the gold representing Dorset's sandy beaches and the Dorset landmarks of Golden Cap and Gold Hill. The flag was adopted by the County Council in 2008.
